Senator Patty Murray Owes an Apology

Dec. 15 EST

“I have stood on the line in Everett, Wash., where we have thousands of workers who go to work every day to build these planes,” Murray says. “I would challenge anybody to tell me that they’ve stood on a line in Alabama and seen anybody building anything.”

I had reserved judgement on this quote from Senator Patty Murray (D-Washington) because I deeply respect her and what she has stood for in representing her state, but I believe she does owe Alabamians an apology.  I have been able to confirm that the quote in the NPR story that has caused such a firestorm of response from the Governor, Lt. Governor, Senator Richard Shelby (R) and Rep. Bobby Bright (D),  among others, is both complete and verbatim (so there is no case to be made that she was taken out of context or misquoted).

I believe her argument was that they already build planes in Washington, so the infrastucture and training and workforce are already in place, but given she said none of that in answer to the question the reaction has been warranted.  I hope she steps forward soon with an apology so we can move on from this and get back once again to things that really matter.

UPDATE:  Perhaps, I should also disclose that I have been in the same facilities (including the largest building in the world by volume) where they build these massive planes in Everett, Washington and that may give me a little different perspective on the belief that there’s nothing else like it in the country.  (Which certainly doesn’t mean there couldn’t be right here in Alabama)
