Sunday Reading: “I Was Sick And You Took Care of Me”

Sun. Aug. 02, 03:30pm EST

A short excerpt from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, that can cause distinct moments of cognitive dissonance when presented to conservative Christians who oppose health care reform:

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left.

Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”

Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

<sigh>

Here we go again, selective use of scripture by a leftie who could care less about the morality of said scripture.

See I know churches are out there helping people -- people of faith, donating time and money to the least of these. All without the hand of Caesar.

This is a blatant attempt to lable Christians hypocrites for not supporting Caesar run healthcare. While this may get traction in moonbat-land, those of faith know the truth.

Joe,

So you're saying that people of faith can't differ on this point? There is only YOUR truth and YOUR faith.

No, I am not, but this particular poster has proven he is willing to twist values that he himself clearly does not believe to make political hay. I see it all over (from the left) and not just here, one great recent example is that of using the tolerance language in the bible to justify same-sex marriage -- The bible was real clear on this point ;-)

My point is there is nothing inherently "religiously moral" about a government run health care, quite the opposite, Federal Government will be forced to push religious charity based health care out and the Federal plan be used to fund many medical practices that would be considered by many of faith (including Islam) to be abominations to God.

I think to argue an agnostic (if not atheistic) government agency -- bereft of morality in many cases -- is the Godly thing to do is a bit much.

LOL so opposing a proposed piece of legislation is equivalent to Christian hypocrisy. Nice try, dude. I reckon that also means that we're supposed to be living in a theocracy, too, since given the original premise it's the government that's supposed to be administering the work of the church.

Kris, people of faith can differ on anything, but that premise is completely inconsistent with the entire New Testament.

Jesus was speaking to individuals, meeting people face to face, then meeting those needs personally. Trying to equate that with giving more money to the government to supposedly accomplish the same task is such a departure from what Jesus was teaching that it's not even close.

you're silly Chris, how is a single person supposed to meet 340,831,831 people face to face?

Giving more money to the government ensures that there are more people to meet face to face with every individual of those 340,831,831 people.

When I go to the doctors' its always a face to face meeting, don't know how it is for you.
